Cylindropuntia imbricata, Cane Cholla, is endemic to the south-west of the USA and Northern Mexico and is found at elevations up to 2300M asl.
It has long cylindrical cladodes with pronounced raised tubercles and extremely sharp spines. The purple flower is borne in summer.
Cylindropuntia imbricata is hardy in warmer parts of the UK but must have excellent drainage. It requires a substrate with very little organic material to which grit, gravel, limestone chunks and sharp sand had been added. Volcanic rock dust mixed into the substrate will provide many nutrients and trace minerals. If Cylindropuntia imbricata is grown on a sloping gradient or in a raised bed, the drainage will be improved.
