Echeveria 'Black Prince' is an extremely attractive Echeveria hybrid: a cross between Echeveria affinis from Sinaloa and Durango and Echeveria shaviana from Nuevo León and Tamaulipas. It inherits the dark colouration of Echeveria affinis while the spatulate shape of its foliage comes from Eveveria shaviana. The foliage however is heavier and chunkier than that of Echeveria shaviana and in that respect more similar to Echeveria affinis. Whether the selected clone of Echeveria affinis known as 'Black Knight' was used as a parent plant is not known but it would be resonable to assume it was. The resultant colour of the foliage is purplish to dark maroon - not as dark or as pointed as 'Black Knght' and with a wider more open rosette. The flowers in summer are vermilion-red.

An easy plant to cultivate but like all Echeverias it is prone to mealy bug. Dabbing the individual bugs with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol will take care of them and standing the plants outside in the cold during the autumn and early winter months will help prevent a re-investation.
