Equisetum scirpoides, Dwarf Horsetail, is the smallest of the horsetails with diminutive unbranched stems that have a wavy appearance as they zizag between segments. Like the much larger Equisetum hyemale, it is an evergreen perennial and remains attractive throughout the year. It has a vigorous habit and like all members of this genus, its growth should be restricted by growing it in a container. Equisetums that are grown in the ground run the risk of spreading throughout the garden. By growing it in a container, you show this curious survivor from a prehistoric lineage in its best light where it can be admired without the anxiety that it will run rampant.
Equisetum scirpoides is a spore-bearing pteridphyte and fertile stems produce small, erect, sharp-pointed, black, cone-shaped, strobili at their tips.
