Description

Roscoea alpina is a small Ginger endemic to the Himalayan region where it grows to elevations of 3500m. It has a delicate purple or lilac inflorescence with the central lobe of the corolla orbicular and erect and the labellum not reflexed. We find it is one of the first Roscoeas to send up new growth, sometimes as early as the first week in May but more typically mid May through to early June. Nontheless it still manages to miss all but the very latest of frosts. Growth is rapid and is quickly followed by a succession of flowers.

Roscoeas are wonderful Gingers that should be more widely grown. Their early flowering - compared to Heychiums - and the very prolific nature of their flowering, make them a delightful addition to any garden. Roscoea alpina is one of the best.
