Scadoxus multiflorus or Blood Lily is a spectacular plant with a large globe-shaped umbel of red flowers on long pedicels and with long stamens and tepals. Apart from the anthers which are yellow, the entire umbel is red and resembles a spherical explosion of fireworks. It is a truly extraordinary inflorescence. The foliage is broad and green with a wavy margin. Scadoxus multiflorus is rewarding plant to grow and is relatively simple to cultivate providing it is kept warm and frost-free during winter. It thrives in semi-shade and requires a rich yet free-draining substrate.
