Elegia elephantina, Large Cape Rush is a robust member of the Restionaceae which forms handsome clumps that grow to about 1.5m taller or taller. The dark green stems are jointed giving them a slightly zig-zag habit and have reddish-brown sheaths at the nodes which drop off leaving a brown band. In summer, the clump is topped with dark-brown flower clusters giving it a very elegant and distinctive appearance.

There are over 350 species of South African Restionaceae and Elegia elephantina is one the hardiest, taking temperatures down to about -7 or -8C. It is very easy in cultivation, preferring a warm sunny location and regular waterings throughout the growing season without being constantly wet. Like most Restios and many South African plants it prefers a nutrient-poor soil.
