Caltha palustris, the Marsh Marigold, is a much-loved herbaceous perennial, a British native as well as endemic to the cooler regions of Northen Europe, Northern Asia and Northern America. It proliferates in damp soil and is perfectly happy fully submerged, its large glossy kidney-shaped foliage held aloft on long tall hollow stems. It is one of the first native plants to flower in the Spring and the giant yellow buttercups are a cheerful sight after the grey days of winter.

Caltha palustris is quick-growing and readily forms a large herbaceous clump. It makes a wonderful no-fuss addition to any water garden, effective whether submerged, as a marginal or in a bog garden. Its cold-hardiness and sturdy growth, together with its tenacious roots make it an ideal plant for adventurous landscapers who wish to experiment with rock and water and the natural creative consequences of mixing the two: waterfalls and cascades.

Happy in any cool wet environment, Caltha palustris does best in a slightly alkaline soil in the semi-shade of other water plants but as long as its roots are wet it will also thrive in sun.
