Woodwardia fimbriata, Giant Chain Fern, is a dramatic and elegant fern from the west coast of northern America, growing in disjunct populations from British Columbia in Canada down to Baja California in Mexico with an epicentre in California in the moist Redwood gullies and stream-banks where it is never far from water. It is the largest of the American ferns. Its fronds can grow over a metre in length and are held erect or semi-erect above the ground in a distinctive manner. It loves a moist soil and should be grown in a shady location that is not allowed to dry out completetely in the heat of summer.
