Vitis coignetiae, Crimson Glory Vine, is a vigourous strong-growing rambling climber that has large ovate foliage that turns orange, scarlet and crimson in the autumn. It produces small dark grapes which have a bitter flavour but it is grown for its magnificent foliage and its ability to rapidly cover an unsightly area. It is perfect for climbing up an old dead tree where its scrambling, rambling habit will quickly transform into a thick bower of green followed by the startling and very dramatic autumn colour. It can also be grown along the top of a sturdy wall where it will usually need regular winter pruning to keep it in check. Wherever it is grown, remember: this is a plant that need space - lots of it!
