Acanthus mollis, Bear's Breeches, is a well-known herbaceous perennial with broad, green, arching foliage that is deeply cut and produces in the summer months a tall column of hooded white flowers with mauve bracts.
Acanthus mollis is very easy to grow and fully hardy but prefers a south-facing aspect with full sun and a deep humus-rich soil. It grows large and forms a large offsetting clump so requires plenty of room. It is difficult to move once established and should only be grown in its permanent position.
