Koelreuteria paniculata, Golden Rain Tree is a medium to large-sized deciduous tree from Asia with attractive pinnate foliage with serrated margins and large panicles of yellow flowers in Spring. Perhaps its most unusual and distinctive feature are the lantern-shaped seedpods that develop in the summer turning yellow then orange and bronze into the autumn. The foliage also puts on a colourful autumn display turning golden. As the tree matures it slowly develops a broad crown.
Koelreuteria paniculata needs full sun and a well-drained ideally alkaline soil. It is remarkably hardy and will sustain temperatures down to around -15C.
