× Phyllosasa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' has been known until relatively recently by exotic gardeners and bamboo enthusiasts as Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima'. Although some of the taxonomical issues still remain unresolved, × Phyllosasa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' is for now the correct taxonomical name to use for this bi-generic hybrid. It is thought to be a variegated sport of a cross between Phillostachys nigra var. henonsis and Sasa veitchii f. tyugokensis.

× Phyllosasa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' has the large leaves characteristic of its Sasa parent and they are variegated with distinctive and very beautiful creamy-yellow stripes with delicate hair-like cilia at the nodes. It has inherited its tall habit from its Phyllostachys nigra var. henonsis parent, the largest and hardiest of the Phyllostachys nigra varieties. Like both its parents, it is a vigourous bamboo that will spread to form a large running clump so some thought is necessary before planting it in its final position. It does well in a large container and can tolerate spells in a cool conservatory as long as it is kept damp and the central-heating is kept to an absolute minimum. Outdoors, it will tolerate lows down to at least -20C.

× Phyllosasa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' is an outstanding hardy bamboo that deserves to be more widely planted. The variegation is exceptionally beautiful with a very refined feel to it and the bright foliage will lighten any dark corner.
