Aspidistra daibuensis 'Tidy Trim' is a cultivar of Aspidistra daibuensis originally selected and collected in Taiwan in 1999 by Bleddwyn and Sue Wynn-Jones. It has narrow leaves that grow to about 60-70cm long and they are maculated with light yellow/green spots. Some of these spots randomly conjoin together to form elongated markings. The overall variegation is more subtle and lighter than some other cultivars of the very variable Aspidistra daibuensis. It has pinkish-purplish flowers that arise directly from the rhizomes in winter.

Aspidistra daibuensis 'Tidy Trim' likes a shady aspect with fertile well-drained soil. It makes a great houseplant but is also hardy and will do well in a sheltered shady spot outdoors in most UK gardens. A bark of mulch to keep its creeping rhizomes warm and overhanging foliage from nearby exotic evergreens will help to create the right microclimate.

Additional Information

Order Asparagales
Family Asparagaceae
Sub-Family Nolinoideae
Geographical Origin Horticultural cultivar. The very variable type species is from Taiwan
Cultivation Ideal as a houseplant. Indirect light. Prefers a moist well-drained soil but tolerates drying out. If grown outdoors it requires a sheltered shady spot, ideally against a north-facing wall or in a sheltered aspect with overhanging foliage
Eventual Height 60-70cm
Eventual Spread 1m: clump-forming with creeping rhizomes
Hardiness Tolerates sub-zero temperatures very well particularly in a sheltered aspect and in the protection of overhanging foliage. Mulch well but leave a small perimeter so you can spot the flowers in winter. Foliage will resprout if burnt after severe frosts
