Vintage Botanical Print - Nymphaea alba

A quality reproduction vintage print of Nymphaea alba, White Waterlily or Nenuphar, reproduced from a chromolithographic print by Maurice Pillard Verneuil for Eugène Grasset's 'La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales' (1896) for which Verneuil was the principle illustrator. It appears in the volume as Plate 7.

Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869-1942) was a French artist and illustrator whose ouevre spanned the Art Nouveau movement and the illustrations from 'La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales' are infused with this new style that took fin de siècle Europe by storm.

Nymphaea alba, the White Waterlly - or Nenuphar as it is known in France - is native to Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia. It is the hardiest of the true waterlilies and is the only Nymphaea species that is native to the UK. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753.
