Hedychium thyrsiforme, Pincushion Ginger, is a strong-growing Hedychium with broad jungly foliage and a dramatic inflorescence with white spidery flowers. The downward-curling labellum and long slightly-crooked filaments erupt from the green pincushion-like bract and give the inflorescence a very exotic and delicate appearance.
In a genus that is renowned for its late autumn flowering, Hedychium thyrisiforme is no exception and many exotic gardeners will wait years for it to flower successfully; the onset of the cold winter weather often curtailing growth before the flowers have a chance to open.
A rewarding species for the experienced grower.
