Delosperma nubigenum, the Yellow Ice Plant, has small yellow flowers and forms a dense mat of bright green succulent foliage. It is the hardiest of the Delospermas in the British climate and providing the substrate is very free-draining - with plenty of gravel and sand - can survive the wet of the UK winter with minimal protection. In southern coastal areas or warm urban areas that benefit from a frost-free microclimate no protection at all may be necessary and in less-favoured areas a double-covering of fleece will be all that's required.

In xeric gardens its carpet-forming ground-covering growth is ideal to soften the often harsh visual appearance of gravel and it forms an ideal counterpoint to larger architectural succulents like Agaves, Yuccas and hardy Aloes.

Recommended.
