Delosperma echinatum, Pickle Plant, is an unusual Delospema from the Eastern Cape with an irresistible appeal. It has chubby succulent foliage covered in soft white hair-like spines giving it the appearance of a cornichon or miniature gherkin and in the summer months it produces pale creamy-yellow flowers. A complete charmer...

It appreciates full sun and a very well-drained gritty substrate. Tender to even a hint of frost it is a houseplant only. If you are tempted to have it outdoors in the summer, be mindful that slugs and snails are not deterred by those stubbly little spines and will be only too happy to snack on your prize plant and reduce it to a mess. Precautions are needed!
