Magnolia grandiflora 'Exmouth' is the oldest known cultivar of the Southern Magnolia and probably the finest. It has deep-green, glossy, leathery leaves with a brown indumentum underneath and the enormous waxy flowers - usually borne from June through to the end of the summer and on into autumn - have a delicious lemony fragrance.

Magnolia grandiflora is thought to have been introduced to the UK in 1726 by Mark Catesby on his return from his second American voyage and the tree and its magnificent flower achieved great renown after Catesby published his coloured engravings of it, including the preparatory drawings for his enormous work, 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands', published between 1729 and 1747 in two volumes and a supplement.

A specimen of Magnolia grandiflora was grown at Exmouth by Sir John Colliton, whose son had settled in America and it was from this tree that the original clones were taken with local nurseryman allowed to take cuttings on a rotational basis at great expense until the tree was apparently cut down by mistake in 1794.
