Sempervivum globiferum subsp. allionii
- Clump-forming succulent alpine
- Beautiful symmetrical rosettes
- Ideal on green-roofs or in dry stone walls
- Extremely drought-tolerant
Sempervivum globiferum subsp. allionii, Rolling Houseleek, is a stunningly beautiful succulent alpine from high elevation in Europe where it is subjected to extemes of cold during the winter and drought in the summer. It is often sold under one of its many synonyms, usually Jovibarba allionii but most Jovibarba have now been subsumed into Sempervivum and the entire family Crassulaceae has been reorganised under APGIV (2016) with the old sub-family Sedoideae being replaced by the new Sempervivoideae, itself subdivided into 2 tribes: Kalanchoeae and Sedeae. Meanwhile - back in the garden - Sempervivum globiferum subsp. allionii is extremely easy to cultivate, thriving on neglect providing it has good drainage. It requires little soil, little water and tolerates drought and frost. Its rosettes are beautifully symmetrical and quickly form a small clump of surrounding offsets. It can be also a very successful houseplant.
