Pleione 'Tongariro' is a cultivar developed in 1981 by Ian Butterfield (B. Williams) and is a cross between Pleione 'Versailles' and Pleione pleionoides (Synonym: Pleione speciosa). Pleione 'Versailles' was itself the first man-made Pleione hybrid (non-naturally occuring hybrid) and was first crossed by Georges Morel in 1966 using Pleione formosana and Pleione limprichtii as the parent species.

Pleione 'Tongariro' is a beautiful cultivar with violet petals, a whitish throat marked with red spots and red and yellow lip markings on a pale violet lip. It has a particularly attractive white frill on the lip. The flowers are borne on an upright erect stem and are long-lasting.

It is an extremely easy orchid to grow and tolerates some light frost so can be grown outside in the most favoured parts of the UK. It does need to be kept on the dry side during winter.

Indoors, it will overwinter well on a windowsill if kept dry during its dormancy.
