Abutilon megapotamicum or Trailing Abutilon as it sometimes called, is one of the hardiest of the species Abutilons and is native to the southern part of South America. The flowers on Abutilon megapotamicum are extraordinarily beautiful and have a red Chinese-lantern upper half with yellow petals on the lower half from which the anthers dangle down. It is an unusual and exotic look.

Abutilon megapotamicum is one of the best Abutilons to start with if you are looking to buy your first Abutilon. Although it will probably require some protection in extreme weather in the colder parts of the country, it is reliably hardy in most winters throughout the southern counties, urban microclimates and coastal locations. Nonetheless, it is sensible to grow it in a sheltered south-facing aspect up against a wall.

Abutilon megapotamicum is a wonderful plant and creates an exotic sub-tropical atmosphere. Its flowers are produced from spring onwards, continuing for a very long time, throughout the summer and well into the autumn months. The flowers are a magnet for pollinating insects and butterflies.

Recommended.
