Luzula sylvatica, Greater Woodrush is a handsome lush-leaved grass-like member of the Reed family with long and relatively broad green foliage that has delicate downy white hairs along the margins. It spreads to form a low clumping groundcover, preferring a moist acidic soil in a shady or partially shady aspect. Small creamy-white flowers are produced on the end of tall spikes from spring onwards throughout the summer.

Luzula sylvatica is an ideal evergreen groundcover for damp locations and should be used en masse in landscaping schemes more often. The white flowerheads have a wonderful delicate and graceful charm particularly when moving gently in the breeze.
