Hosta 'Canadian Blue' is medium-sized Hosta with blue-green foliage and fragrant white/pale lavender blooms. It is similar to Hosta 'Halycon' and some consider there is no difference between the two while others maintain that it is different. Personally, I consider 'Halycon' to be more blue in foliage colour. 'Halycon' itself is a hybrid between Hosta 'Tardiflora' and Hosta seiboldiana 'Elegans' and forms one of the first generation of 'Tardiana' type crosses developed by Eric Smith.

The leaves of 'Canadian Blue' grow more blue with age as the amount of wax in the waxy cuticle starts to increase with maturity. After reaching maturity at about 5 years old the output of wax generated in the waxy cuticle starts to reach a maximum. For the plants to maintain the deepest blue throughout the season they should be grown in the shade as too much sunlight will cause them to go more green.
