Allium karataviense is endemic to the mountain ranges of Central Asia where it grows amongst the limestone scree and accumulated rock debris at the base of slopes. It is one of the most exotic and ornamental of all the Alliums. It has dramatic broad grey-green elliptical foliage - considerably broader than most other Allium species - and they are tinged with purple on the edges and undersides. The very short scape is mounted by a stunning spherical globe of pale mauve densely-packed flowers, each with a darker vein. Its foliage lasts longer than most Alliums and the flowers are an absolute bee magnet.

Recommended.
