Strelitzia reginae, Bird of Paradise Flower, is a plant that needs little introduction. Grown in the UK since 1773, its lush tropical foliage and dramatic inflorescence has long made it a firm favourite for exotic gardeners and those seeking something just a little more tropical-looking. Relatively easy to cultivate, Strelitzia reginae will thrive in any well-drained rich soil as long as it is in a warm, sheltered location with plenty of sun. It enjoys plenty of water and liquid-feeding during the summer months. What it doesn't enjoy at all is frost or prolonged sub-zero temperatures so it is best suited in the UK to growing in a container that can be moved to a frost-free location in the winter.
