Rodgersia pinnata, Featherleaf Rodgersia, is a robust hardy herbaceous perennial from the hills and valleys of Yunnan and Sichuan where it flourishes in moist humus-rich soils. Rodgersia pinnata has a variable leaf form that is not always arranged in a true pinnate structure and some leaflets may be grouped at the base of the rachis with others near the tip. The only other Rodgersia that it is likely to be confused with is Rodgersia sambucifolia which has a true pinnate leaf.

Although a species that has been known to horticulture for a very long time, the taxonomy of Rodgersia pinnata remains unresolved.

In cultivation, Rodgersia pinnata is ideal in a boggy position or as a water-marginal where its vigourous growth will soon form a large clump that in summer creates a very exotic and tropical atmosphere.

Tall panicles of white Astilbe-like flowers in summer.
