Garrya elliptica, the Silk Tassel Shrub, is a large evergreen shrub to small tree from the west coast of the USA where it is found in the coastal hills and valleys of California and southern Oregon. A welcome addition to the range of hardy evergreen foliage trees that can be grown in the UK, it is however, the highly ornamental creamy-white catkins that appear in late winter to early Spring for which Garrya elliptica is usually grown. The long pendant bracts of these 'silk tassels' remain on the plant until well into the summer.
