Cyrtomium fortunei, Fortune's Holly Fern, is native to forests, woodlands and limestone gullies throughout Asia, growing to elevations of 2400m and is naturalised locally in Europe and North America. It is an upright erect fern with deep green leathery pinnae that form an attractive shuttlecock rosette. It is extremely hardy and in most locations will remain evergreen throughout the winter, only in very exposed localities and very harsh winters becoming semi-deciduous. It thrives on a fertile moist humus-enriched soil with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH and a shady aspect.

Cyrtomium fortunei is another of the many plants named after Robert Fortune who introduced it into Great Britain from his first trip to China in the years 1843-46 while working for the Royal Horticultural Society. It was described by the great pteridophile John Smith, the first curator of the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew, who did so much to fuel the Victorian fashion for ferns and who grew an astonishing 1044 new varieties of fern during his time at Kew.
