Cheilocostus speciosus, Spiral or Crêpe Ginger, is an extremely attractive Ginger with large glossy leaves arranged in an elegant and showy spiral formation around the stem. In late autumn it forms a red cone-shaped terminal inflorescence from which emerge white crinkled flowers that resemble crêpe paper. Like many gingers it requires a lot of heat and extra feeding to get it to a flowering stage in the UK. Cold tolerant, but best considered half-hardy, most gardeners will find they need to keep it fleeced under glass in a frost-free environment over winter. In some favoured southwest and coastal locations, it can be tried outdoors in a warm sheltered location - ideally up aganst a wall or with overhangiing protection - good drainage and a thick mulch.
